Dentist

: a person who’s job is treating people’s teeth

(n.)牙医

e.g. Yesterday, I visited my dentist for a regular dental check-up.

昨天我到牙医那里去做定期的牙齿检查

 

Dental hygienist

: a person who works with a dentist and cleans people’s teeth to help them healthy.

[haɪ'dʒiːnɪst]

(n.)（负责清洁牙齿的）洗牙师

Dental 本系列第二篇有讲到是形容词牙的，牙齿的意思。Hygienist 就是洗牙师的意思。Dental hygienist 是有专业执照的牙科人员。

e.g. The dental hygienist will clean and polish your teeth.

洗牙师会帮你洗牙和抛光。

 

Dental assistant

[ə'sɪstənt]

: a dental health professional who works closely with and under the supervision of a dentist.

(n.)牙科助理

Assistant 是助手的意思。

e.g. The dental assistant brings me into one of their private patient rooms.

牙医助手带我到一个私人病房。

 

Make an appointment

: schedule a meeting with someone

预约

看牙医是要先预约。 句型是make an appointment with somebody和某人预约。

e.g. Ryan is phoning his dental clinic to make an appointment with his dentist.  

Ryan 在打电话给牙科诊所预约他的牙医。

 

Dental check-up

: a medical examination to test your teeth

(n.)牙齿检查

Check-up就是健康检查、体检的意思。 是可数名词。

e.g. Dentists recommend that you go for a check-up at least twice a year.

牙医建议一年两次牙齿检查。

 

X-ray

X光

Ray 是光线、辐射线的意思。 不是每次dental check-up牙齿检查都需要X光。 只有第一次看牙是必须照的。 但如果你的牙齿有很多问题， 牙医会要求照X光 来看牙的损坏程度。 照X光英文就是take an X-Ray.

e.g. If you have serious problems with your teeth, the dentist will need to take an X-ray to see the damage to my teeth more clearly .

如果你牙齿有严重的问题， 牙医需要照X光，去更清楚地看到你牙齿的损坏程度。

 

Toothache

: pain caused by something being wrong with one of your teeth

(n.)牙疼

这是组合词：tooth 牙齿 + ache 痛。 如果要表示我牙疼， 是用I have 的句型来表示。

e.g. I have toothache.

我牙疼。

 

Tooth filling

: restore a tooth damaged by decay back to its normal function.

(n.)补牙

这是名词说法，相当于是总称。 有时只说filling 。如果要表示动作，比如去补牙 ， 英文可以说get a filling.

Filling

: the artificial substance put into holes in teeth to repair them

(n.)（补牙的）填料

这是看牙医常听到的单词。 Filling是可数名词，如果你有cavity 蛀牙， 牙医一般会告诉你有几处fillings 要做。

e.g. I had to get a filling on one of my back teeth the last time I went to the dentist.

我上次去看牙医补了后面一个牙。

 

Fill

: to put filling in a hole

(v.)补(牙)

这是动词补牙的意思。补蛀牙就是Fill in the cavity ，还有fill a hole 补牙洞。

e.g. If the dentist sees any cavities, he will clean and fill the holes.

如果牙医看到有蛀牙，他会清洁牙齿然后补牙洞。

 

Crown

: an artificial piece used to cover a damaged tooth

(n.)牙冠

当牙齿已经不能再补了， 医生就会建议镶一个牙冠来保护损坏的牙齿。Crown 本身就有皇冠的意思。

e.g. You will need to have a crown fitted, I am afraid that I can’t fill your tooth any more.

你要镶一个牙冠了 ，你那颗牙不能再补了。

 

Cap

: an artificial covering on a tooth that protects it

(n.)牙盖

这是一种保护补牙的东西。

e.g.  The dentist put a cap on the tooth to stop it disintegrating further.

牙医给牙齿套上一个牙盖防止牙齿进一步的裂开。

 

Get a tooth pulled

: the act of taking out a tooth

拔牙

Pull 就是拉、拽的意思。Get a tooth pulled 拔牙是日常用法。 拔牙有一个很正式的名词说法，叫tooth extraction 拔牙， extraction 就是拔出的意思。如果是拔智齿就可以说get a wisdom tooth pulled。

e.g. My boyfriend got a tooth pulled yesterday.

我男朋友昨天拔牙。

 

Teeth cleaning

: the removal of dental plaque from teeth

(n.)洗牙

e.g. How often should I go for a teeth cleaning?

我应该多久要去洗一次牙？

 

Implant

: to put a fake tooth

['ɪmplænt]

(v.)(n.)植牙

Implant 本身就是植入、移植的意思。用在牙科上就是指植入牙齿的意思。即可用做动词也可用为名词。 植牙也可以说dental implant。  

e.g. How much do dental implants cost?

植牙要多少钱？

 

Braces

: a device placed on the teeth to make them straight

[b'reɪsɪz]

（矫正牙齿的）牙套

e.g. He needs braces on his bottom teeth, they are crooked.

他下面的牙齿需要带牙套，那些牙齿不整齐。
